The government has announced that it will sponsor only 800 fans to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Ghana’s Sports Minister, Kofi Adams.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Kofi Adams explained that the sponsorship decision is guided by the need to balance national priorities, financial responsibility, and support for the national team.

He noted that while the government recognises the importance of fan support at major tournaments, resources must be carefully managed to ensure other key sectors also receive adequate attention.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to attract millions of fans from around the globe. For many supporters, attending the tournament represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cheer on their national team live on football’s biggest stage. However, due to the high costs associated with travel, accommodation, and logistics, government support often plays a crucial role in enabling fans to make the trip.

According to him, the allocation of 800 sponsored fans is intended to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.

He revealed that the cost per supporter is estimated at $9,250, which includes airfare, accommodation, and local transportation throughout the tournament.

Adams said the high expenses have led to the decision to limit the number of sponsored supporters.

“The cost is quite high, so we’re thinking about not doing more than 800. The Supporters’ Union are many; we can’t take all. If we’re successful at sending [this number], the calculations we did, even at the group stage, will cost you about $9,250 per head. We’re paying for their air tickets, accommodation, and transport,” he stated.

He further explained that beneficiaries will still be required to cover some personal costs.

“They have to pay for their visa fees, which should be their contributions, and feeding fees,” he added.

The Minister also disclosed that the ministry has turned down requests from individuals seeking contracts to supply meals for the supporters during the tournament.

“A lot of people have come to the ministry looking for a feeding contract, but I told them we’re not doing that,” he said.

Football remains one of the most unifying sports in Ghana, with the national team, the Black Stars, enjoying strong nationwide support. Fans are widely regarded as a vital source of motivation for players, helping to create an energetic atmosphere at international tournaments and strengthening national pride.

As preparations for the 2026 World Cup continue, attention will shift toward team qualification and squad planning. The government’s announcement has also sparked ongoing discussions about how best to support both the national team and its supporters on the global stage.
