GoldBod-backed water rehabilitation begins

GoldBod water rehabilitation

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd (GWL), Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has embarked on a working tour of the Western and Central Regions to inspect three water treatment facilities earmarked for rehabilitation under a GH¢8.4 million project funded by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

The visit follows the signing of a rehabilitation agreement between GoldBod and GWL to restore the Bonsa, Daboase and Sekyere-Hemang Water Supply Systems. The initiative is aimed at improving water production, boosting operational efficiency and expanding access to safe drinking water for thousands of residents across the two regions.

The rehabilitation project was approved after an independent technical assessment identified the three facilities as requiring urgent intervention.

During the tour, Hon. Mutawakilu inspected the Bonsa Water Treatment Plant, which supplies the Tarkwa Municipality; the Daboase Water Treatment Plant, which serves the Takoradi Metropolis and nearby communities; and the Sekyere-Hemang Water Treatment Plant in the Central Region. The inspections allowed management to assess the current state of the facilities ahead of the commencement of rehabilitation works.

At the Bonsa Water Treatment Plant, the Managing Director examined the persistent siltation at the raw water abstraction point, a longstanding challenge that has affected water production. He also inspected an improvised floating abstraction pump designed by engineers in the Western Region to keep the plant operational despite the difficult conditions.

Hon. Mutawakilu praised the ingenuity of the engineering team, describing the innovation as a practical response to a pressing challenge, while emphasising that the rehabilitation project would provide a permanent engineering solution to the problem.

Beyond inspecting the facilities, the Managing Director met separately with management and staff in the Western and Central Regions to review operational performance and discuss measures to improve service delivery.

The discussions centred on regional Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), revenue mobilisation, billing and collection, meter reading, customer service, the reduction of Non-Revenue Water (NRW), staff accountability, supervision and the effective use of performance monitoring systems.

Regional management presented reports highlighting operational achievements, ongoing interventions and key challenges, while employees shared practical recommendations for improving operations. Staff also welcomed the Managing Director’s engagement, describing it as a morale booster that encourages open communication, strengthens teamwork and provides greater clarity on management’s expectations.

Hon. Mutawakilu urged employees to uphold professionalism, innovation, teamwork and accountability, stressing that every member of staff has an important role to play in enhancing operational efficiency and delivering reliable, quality water services to customers.

He noted that while the GoldBod-funded rehabilitation project would significantly improve infrastructure, its long-term success would depend on a strong organisational culture driven by performance and accountability.

The inspection tour forms part of GWL management’s broader commitment to engaging employees, assessing operational challenges firsthand and ensuring that the GH¢8.4 million GoldBod-supported rehabilitation project delivers sustainable improvements in water production, infrastructure resilience and reliable water supply for communities across Ghana.
