Gold Fields Ghana Limited has confirmed that ownership and operational control of the Damang Mine will fully revert to the Government of Ghana upon the expiry of its mining lease on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

The company explained in a press statement that while it is facilitating the transition process, all decisions regarding the future ownership and operation of the mine will be taken solely by the Government of Ghana once the asset formally returns to state control.

The expiry of the lease marks a significant moment in Ghana’s mining sector governance and resource management framework, with the Damang Mine set to come under full government control from tomorrow.

Gold Fields, the current operator, referred to a structured handover process in line with an agreement reached in April 2025, aimed at ensuring a smooth, orderly and responsible transition of the asset.

“The Damang mine is being transitioned from Gold Fields to the Government of Ghana in a structured process designed to ensure continuity and stability,” the company stated, adding that implementation is progressing as planned.

According to Gold Fields, the transition process is being undertaken in close collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission of Ghana, and a government-appointed Transition Team.

Discussions have centred on asset transfer arrangements, technical preparedness, and operational continuity ahead of the handover date.

The company stressed that its role is strictly limited to supporting a safe and orderly transition and does not extend to determining who will operate the mine after the lease expires.

“The outcome of the process is entirely determined by Government,” Gold Fields emphasised, noting that ownership and operatorship decisions rest exclusively with the state.

As part of the transition framework, priority has been placed on safeguarding jobs, protecting contractors, ensuring operational stability, and maintaining continuity for host communities dependent on the mine.

Gold Fields further noted that its engagement is primarily technical and operational, designed to prevent disruptions in production and preserve stakeholder confidence during the transition period.

Meanwhile, a Tender Committee has recommended Engineers and Planners Company Limited (E&P) for the next phase of the Damang Gold Mine lease, after the wholly Ghanaian-owned firm secured a 93.15% score in the evaluation process.
