The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) will host a high-level Steering Committee Meeting of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) at the Fiesta Royal Hotel in Accra from September 17 to 18, 2026.

The two-day meeting, supported by KGL Group, will bring together leading media and journalists’ association leaders from across Africa to deliberate on critical issues affecting journalism on the continent.

The discussions will focus on press freedom, journalists’ safety and welfare, professional development, media sustainability, freedom of expression, ethical journalism and the future of the African media landscape.

The meeting comes at a critical time for journalism in Africa, amid concerns over attacks and threats against journalists, restrictions on media freedom, digital and information disorder, economic pressures on media organisations and the rapidly changing technological environment.

The Steering Committee is expected to assess these developments and strengthen collective strategies to defend the rights, safety and welfare of journalists while promoting stronger continental solidarity and advocacy for media freedom.

Ghana Bids to Host 6th FAJ Conference

Another key issue on the agenda will be the selection of the host country for the 6th FAJ Conference, with Ghana among the countries that have submitted bids to host the conference.

The meeting will also provide a platform for media leaders to exchange experiences and best practices, review ongoing FAJ programmes and decisions from previous engagements, and chart a forward-looking agenda for the Federation.

The opening session will be attended by key government officials, diplomatic partners, past GJA National Executives, leaders of media associations, journalists, editors, media executives and other media practitioners, alongside members of the FAJ Steering Committee from various African countries.

The gathering is expected to underscore the importance of constructive engagement between governments, media institutions and journalists’ organisations in creating an environment where journalists can work freely, safely and professionally.

Strengthening African Media Solidarity

FAJ President Omar Faruk Osman is already in Accra engaging key stakeholders ahead of the meeting.

The GJA said it was honoured to host the FAJ Steering Committee in Ghana and viewed the meeting as an important opportunity to strengthen African media solidarity and collective action in defence of journalism and the public’s right to information.

The Association said hosting the meeting in Accra reflected Ghana’s longstanding contribution to the advancement of press freedom, democratic governance and professional journalism on the African continent.

It added that it was committed to ensuring that the engagement provided a meaningful platform for dialogue, solidarity, advocacy and action towards building a safer, stronger, more independent and sustainable African media.

The GJA expressed appreciation to KGL Group for its support towards the successful organisation of the meeting and said it looked forward to welcoming FAJ leadership and media association leaders from across Africa to Accra.
