The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, has urged Ghanaians to play an active role in safeguarding the nation’s water resources as the country marks World Water Day 2026.

In a statement commemorating the day, he extended warm greetings to customers and stakeholders nationwide, emphasising the significance of this year’s theme, “Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.”

He noted that access to safe and reliable water is not only a fundamental human need but also a catalyst for inclusion, dignity, and socio-economic development.

According to him, equitable access to water plays a critical role in empowering women and girls, reducing inequalities, and strengthening communities.

He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to ensuring that no Ghanaian is left behind in accessing safe water, regardless of location, gender, or socio-economic status.

Mutawakilu outlined his vision of building a resilient, efficient, and customer-focused utility capable of delivering sustainable water services across the country.

He said the company remains aligned with government efforts to achieve universal access to safe water and contribute to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6.

Despite ongoing efforts, he acknowledged several challenges confronting the sector, including increasing pollution of water bodies, rising costs of water treatment due to declining raw water quality, ageing infrastructure, and growing demand driven by rapid urbanisation and population growth.

To address these issues, Ghana Water Ltd is implementing a range of strategic interventions. These include expanding and rehabilitating water supply systems, investing in modern treatment technologies, strengthening partnerships with government and development agencies, improving operational efficiency, reducing water losses, and promoting sustainable water resource management.

He reiterated the company’s commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and affordable water to all Ghanaians, while calling on the public to support these efforts through responsible actions.

The Managing Director encouraged customers to pay their water bills promptly using newly introduced electronic payment platforms, conserve water by avoiding wastage, and protect water bodies from pollution.

He also cautioned against illegal connections and other activities that undermine the operations of the company, urging communities to take collective responsibility for maintaining a clean and sustainable environment.

“Water is life, and its sustainability depends on the collective effort of all of us,” he said, calling on Ghanaians to reaffirm their shared responsibility to ensure that where water flows, equality truly grows.
