A major fire outbreak has destroyed several shops opposite the Accra Central Police Station, triggering an intense firefighting operation as emergency crews work to prevent the flames from spreading to surrounding buildings.

The blaze, which engulfed commercial structures in the busy area, sent thick smoke billowing into the sky and caused panic among traders and residents. Property worth tens of thousands of cedis is feared to have been lost, although officials are yet to conduct a full assessment of the damage.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said firefighters from the Accra City Fire Station responded swiftly to the incident and were later reinforced by additional crews from the Ministries, Parliament and Industrial Area Fire Stations. Three extra fire pumps were deployed to strengthen efforts to bring the fire under control.

In the course of the operation, one firefighter sustained injuries. Authorities have not provided details regarding the officer’s condition.

Firefighters have focused on containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to nearby structures, particularly the Accra Central Police Station and adjoining commercial properties.

As of the latest update, the cause of the fire remains unknown and no deaths have been reported. Officials say it is too early to determine the total value of losses incurred by affected shop owners.

Emergency crews continue to battle pockets of fire while securing the area against further risks. The GNFS has appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid the scene to ensure emergency personnel can work effectively.

Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the outbreak once the flames have been completely extinguished.

The fire service has assured the public that all necessary resources have been mobilised to contain the incident and protect nearby properties from further damage.
