EC sets September 2 by-election date for Akwatia constituency

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a by-election will be held in the Akwatia Constituency on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

In a statement signed by Chairperson Jean Mensa, the EC explained that the parliamentary seat had become vacant following Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, necessitating the by-election.

Nomination period and requirements

The Commission has scheduled the submission of nomination forms from Monday, August 11, to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at its Denkyembour District Office. Forms will be received daily between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Prospective candidates are required to:

  • Download nomination forms from www.ec.gov.gh between July 30 and August 13, 2025

  • Submit four completed copies of the nomination forms

  • Obtain endorsements from two registered voters (a proposer and a seconder) and 18 other registered voters from the constituency

  • Attach two recent passport-sized photographs (red background, full-face, ears visible)

  • Include a signed declaration of consent to the nomination

Filing fees

The filing fee has been set at GHC10,000 per candidate. However, female aspirants and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GHC7,500.

The EC urged all political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the stated timelines and guidelines. It further reassured the public of its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and transparent by-election in Akwatia.
