Berekum Chelsea player killed following robbery attack on team
Striker Dominic Frimpong has been confirmed dead after sustaining severe head injuries following a violent armed robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus on Sunday night.
The incident occurred as the Ghana Premier League side returned from Samreboi, where they had suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat to FC Samartex in a Matchday 29 encounter. The journey back to base turned tragic when the team bus was reportedly ambushed at Ahyiresu along the Bibiani–Goaso highway.
According to accounts from the club, armed men suddenly emerged and opened fire on the moving vehicle, forcing a chaotic response from players, technical staff, and officials on board.
“Masked men wielding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse,” the club stated in a post on its official Facebook page. “The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”
In the confusion that followed, several members of the team scattered into nearby vegetation to escape the attack. Frimpong, who was among those affected, sustained critical head injuries during the incident.
He was quickly transported to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment. Medical personnel initially worked to stabilise him, with arrangements being made to transfer him to a regional hospital for further care.
Despite these efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
Frimpong had joined the Blues from Aduana FC earlier this year and was regarded as one of the promising attacking options for the squad.
His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the local football community, with teammates, officials, and supporters expressing grief over the tragedy.
The Ghana Police Service has since launched a full-scale investigation into the incident.
The tragic incident adds to growing calls for improved security measures for teams travelling long distances for league fixtures, as the football fraternity mourns the loss of a young striker whose career has been cut short in such distressing circumstances.
