Baba Jamal has been declared the winner of the Ayawaso East by-election, securing a decisive victory in a closely watched contest.

The by-election, held across key polling stations in the Ayawaso East Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, recorded a low voter turnout as residents cast their ballots to choose a new representative. Electoral officials announced the results after collation, confirming Baba Jamal as the winner.

Certified results from the Electoral Commission of Ghana show that Baba Jamal obtained 10,884 votes, representing 63 per cent of the valid ballots cast. His main challenger, Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,009 votes, while Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana secured 43 votes.

The two independent candidates, Umar Sanda Mohammed and David Akonor, polled 1,885 and 104 votes, respectively.

In total, 17,048 ballots were cast across 113 polling stations. Of these, 16,928 were deemed valid, with 120 rejected. The Ayawaso East constituency has 49,966 registered voters, indicating a relatively low turnout for the by-election.

With this victory, Baba Jamal returns to Parliament, marking a significant moment in the political landscape of Ayawaso East. Constituents now look ahead to the implementation of campaign promises and renewed representation at the national level.
