Asomdwee Park, the burial ground of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, was left to rot and became an eyesore.
The condition of the late President’s tomb was nothing to write home about as some parts of the fencing protecting it broke down.
Animals such as cattle invaded the grounds to munch on the grass and left their excreta behind making the place to stink.
Vendors wander about the place selling all manner of merchandise to vagrants who also come there to rest.
People found alternative routes into the grounds without going through the main gate and as a result went round the security personnel.
The tomb of President Mills which was exposed to the vagaries of the weather has had its metallic cover developing grim cracks.
Monoliths raised a few metres away from the tomb to hold busts of subsequent deceased presidents were either broken or out of position.
While some monoliths were dispositioned, others were completely broken down.
A building meant for a library at the park had been left abandoned.
The facility, located opposite the tomb to provide knowledge on the rich Ghanaian culture, had been converted into a brothel and people came from far and near to use the abandoned building for sexual immorality.
It was total disgrace for the nation to allow the final resting place of its former President to deteriorate to such a disgraceful level.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) the Atta Mills Institute (AMI), Samuel Koku Anyidoho who has dedicate his life to protecting the memory of Prof. Atta Mills deserve commendation for bring the situation to the attention of President Nana Akufo-Addo seeking the help of the state to rehabilitate the place.
It is sad that the government of the party which President Mills belongs to did not find it prudent to rehabilitate the Park whilst in power.
President Nana Akufo-Addo deserves commendation for looking beyond partisan politics and allocated resources to rehabilitate the Park since it is the resting place of a statesman.
Every Ghanaian will be proud of the rehabilitated Asomdwee Park.
It is said that a nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for.
Never gain should we allow the final resting place of presidents and other heroes deteriorate to the levels we have seen at Asomdwee Park.
