At least 12 people have been killed and two others left in critical condition following a horrific head-on collision between a commercial minibus and a trailer at Akomadan in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region.

The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in front of the Offinso North District Assembly.

According to police, the minibus, travelling from Kumasi to Wenchi for Eid celebrations, attempted to overtake another vehicle and veered into the path of an oncoming trailer heading from Techiman to Kumasi.

Confirming the incident, Akomadan District Police Commander, DSP Paul Boabeng Donkor, told Accra-based Citi FM that the reckless overtaking manoeuvre by the minibus driver led to the fatal collision.

Dr. Samuel Freeman Mensah, Medical Superintendent at the Nkenkaasu Government Hospital, disclosed that 11 passengers were pronounced dead on arrival at the facility.

A twelfth victim died while being transferred to Techiman for further treatment. Two survivors are currently in critical but stable condition and receiving intensive care.

Dr. Mensah noted that families of the victims have started arriving at the hospital to identify their loved ones.

He appealed to the public, particularly those with relatives who were travelling to Wenchi for Eid, to visit the Nkenkaasu Government Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for identification and preservation.

Police have towed the wrecked vehicles away from the scene to restore traffic flow and have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

This tragic incident has once again highlighted concerns about road safety on the Kumasi-Techiman highway, particularly the dangers posed by reckless overtaking and speeding, especially during festive periods when traffic volume increases significantly.
