Asante Akyem North MP still in custody in Holland
Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong
Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, says two applications seeking the release of Asante Akyem North MP, Mr Ohene Kwame Frimpong, from custody in the Netherlands have been unsuccessful.
He said the embattled legislator remained in the custody of Dutch authorities and had not been transferred to the United States as widely speculated.
Mr Dafeamekpor disclosed this at a leadership press conference ahead of the resumption of Parliament for the Third Meeting of the Third Session of the Ninth Parliament.
The Majority Chief Whip, the outcome of an extradition hearing scheduled for November 18, 2026, would determine whether Mr Frimpong would be extradited to the United States.
“The MP is still in custody in Holland and has not been taken to the United States. Two applications filed on his behalf for bail have been refused,” Mr Dafeamekpor said.
He explained that one of the applications was substantive while the other was an appeal, but both were rejected by the Dutch judicial authorities.
Mr Frimpong was arrested at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in May 2026 after arriving from Ghana and has since remained in detention pending legal proceedings.
The case is linked to allegations of romance scams and money laundering, which are yet to be determined by the courts.
The Majority Chief Whip said Parliament was closely monitoring developments and preparing for the substantive hearing scheduled for November 18.
He noted that the hearing would be crucial in determining the next phase of the legal process, including any possible extradition request by the United States.
