Widows Association slams Dumelo’s derogatory comments against Lydia Alhassan

The Widows Association of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency has expressed deep disappointment and strong condemnation of recent comments made by John Dumelo, the Parliamentary Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency, against Lydia Seyram Alhassan.
During a recent television program, Mr. Dumelo accused Madam Alhassan of being responsible for the death of her late husband—a claim the association describes as unfounded and offensive.

In a statement, the Widows Association labeled Mr. Dumelo’s remarks as a severe affront to the dignity of widows, who already face significant emotional and societal challenges following the loss of their spouses.
The association emphasized that such baseless accusations only serve to deepen the stigma and discrimination widows endure in society.
The statement also praised Madam Alhassan, who is the current Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, for her resilience and dedication to public service.
Despite her personal tragedy, Madam Alhassan has emerged as a symbol of empowerment, serving her constituents and the nation with distinction.
Her leadership in Parliament and her role as Deputy Majority Chief Whip of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic were particularly highlighted.
The association views Mr. Dumelo’s comments as an attack not just on Madam Alhassan, but on all widows in Ghana.
“His words are a painful reminder of the stigmatization and discrimination that widows often face in our society,” the statement read.
The association expressed disappointment that a public figure would make such baseless accusations for political gain, ignoring the pain and suffering caused by his words.
The Widows Association called on all Ghanaians to reject such divisive rhetoric and stand up for the dignity and respect of widows and women in society.
They also pledged their solidarity with Madam Alhassan and supported any legal action she may take to defend her reputation and seek justice.
The association firmly believes that such actions are necessary to protect the dignity of all widows and to send a clear message that derogatory and unfounded attacks on women, particularly widows, will not be tolerated.
