The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trade Union Congress, Ghana, has announced its decision to join the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSAUoG) and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana in an indefinite industrial action.
Strike to begin on September 20, 2024
The indefinite strike is set to begin on Friday, September 20, 2024.
This action is in response to the failure of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to implement agreed-upon Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus allowances for union members.
Delay in allowance implementation
TEWU stated that despite an approval letter from the Ministry of Finance to the CAGD on August 2, 2024, authorizing the payment of these allowances, no action has been taken.
Unfulfilled govt promises on tier two deductions
In addition, the union expressed frustration over the government’s failure to pay the accrued interest on Tier Two pension deductions from January 2010 to 2016.
The union highlighted the government’s ongoing delays in remitting the Tier Two deductions for 2024, despite these being withheld from members’ salaries.
Call for action
The statement, signed by Madam Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, National Chairperson Secretary, and Mr. Charles Kofi Osei, Deputy General Secretary, emphasized the government’s unkept promises and called for immediate action to address these concerns.
