The Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has referred a case of alleged medical misconduct at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Attorney General’s Department.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry, investigations by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) concluded that certain officials of the hospital acted inappropriately in the planning and evacuation of a patient to Ojobi, where she died.
The Ministry believes that the gravity of the situation warrants further investigation by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice.
The Ministry has requested the assistance of the Attorney General to initiate an investigation to determine the culpability or otherwise of the affected staff and take any necessary action. The case has also been reported to the CID.
Following initial investigations the committee that was set up to investigate the incident recommended that these staff be sanctioned by the Service, but upon consideration of the gravity of the case, the Ministry decided to seek the help of the two institutions.
The Ministry of Health in its statement reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of healthcare delivery and ensuring that such tragic incidents are not repeated.
The full report of the GHS investigation is available on the Ministry’s website.
