Lecturer sues KNUST to quash disciplinary action

A professor at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Rexford Assasie Oppong, has filed a motion at the Kumasi High Court, seeking to overturn the findings of a fact-finding committee established by the university to investigate allegations against him.
The professor claims the committee’s report led to his unfair disciplinary action in August 2024.
According to court documents, Prof. Oppong received a letter from the university registrar in March 2023, detailing accusations made by some senior members of his department.
These allegations included harassment, unilateral decision-making, and non-compliance with postgraduate study regulations.
In response, the university formed a committee to investigate the claims.
Prof. Oppong argues that the committee was improperly constituted, as it did not comply with KNUST’s statutes and lacked the authority to impose disciplinary measures.
He further claims that despite presenting evidence to counter the allegations, he was unfairly dismissed based on the committee’s findings.
The professor’s lawsuit asserts that the committee’s report was biased, lacked credibility, and failed to meet professional standards.
He is asking the court to review and quash the committee’s report, citing violations of procedural and substantive standards.
Prof. Oppong also claims that the committee denied him the opportunity to appeal or request a review of its findings, a move he says is contrary to the university’s regulations.
In his court filing, Prof. Oppong described the committee as “alien to the university’s statutes” and deemed its actions illegal.
He is also requesting that KNUST issue a formal statement clearing him of the charges and is seeking compensation for the psychological stress caused by what he alleges were serious procedural irregularities.
The case is expected to be heard at the Kumasi High Court in the coming weeks.
