The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, has heralded the newly commissioned headquarters of the Central Bank as a game-changer in enhancing operational efficiency and reinforcing Ghana’s position as a leader in Africa’s financial ecosystem.
Dubbed The Bank Square, the solar-powered facility replaces the 67-year-old head office and is the largest office development in the country.
Spanning approximately 150,000 square meters in the heart of Accra, the state-of-the-art structure is equipped with seven key components, including rooftop terraces, conventional office spaces, an auditorium, a medical center, parking terminals, prayer rooms, and more.
Designed to accommodate up to 2,500 staff, it is expected to streamline the central bank’s operations and improve monetary and financial policies to foster sustained economic growth.
President Akufo-Addo applauds BoG’s vision
At the inauguration ceremony, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commended the Bank of Ghana for its strategic role in navigating the nation through global economic uncertainties. Highlighting the BoG’s enduring legacy, he said, “The commissioning of this architectural masterpiece not only stands as a symbol of financial strength and stability but also reflects Ghana’s commitment to modernizing her institutions to meet the demands of a fast-changing world.”
The President also emphasized the facility’s role as a symbol of Ghana’s economic resilience.
Quoting data from the central bank, he pointed to a 6.9% GDP growth in the second quarter of 2024 and a trade surplus of $2.78 billion, with gold and crude oil exports leading the way.
A testament to economic transformation
Dr. Addison underscored The Bank Square as a national monument representing Ghana’s economic transformation.
“This new head office complex, called The Bank Square, is more than a physical structure. It is a testament to our strong commitment to the transformation of the Ghanaian economy and highlights the central bank’s pivotal role in this journey,” he said.
He noted that the centralization of BoG’s multiple offices across Accra into one location would improve coordination, communication, and cost-effectiveness.
Architectural excellence
The facility was designed by internationally celebrated Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye. Dr. Addison praised Adjaye’s firm, Adjaye Associates, for creating an enduring masterpiece that reflects Ghana’s aspirations.
“By commissioning this product of the imagination of Sir David Adjaye, a proud son of Ghana, we boldly affirm our commitment to investing in the nation’s future,” he remarked.
Enhanced capacity for modern financial systems
Dr. Addison highlighted the evolution of the BoG’s functions over its 67-year history, from currency issuance to overseeing over 830 financial institutions today.
He added that the facility’s four key components—Amenity Pavilion, Urban Block, The Podium, and The Tower—reflect the bank’s expanded role in the rapidly changing domestic and global financial landscape.
Boosting economic confidence
The President further noted that Ghana’s economic indicators, including inflation, which dropped from 54.1% in 2022 to 22.1% in October 2024, show the country is on a recovery trajectory.
He attributed this to the BoG’s robust macroeconomic framework, which has enabled Ghana to weather global economic storms.
Commitment to sustainability and growth
Dr. Addison highlighted the eco-friendly and employee-focused aspects of the facility, emphasizing its role in fostering a resilient and sustainable economic future for Ghana.
“As one of Accra’s most significant modern civic landmarks, The Bank Square is a symbol of progress and a commitment to building a sustainable economy,” he concluded.
A legacy for the future
With the inauguration of The Bank Square, the BoG has solidified its position as a cornerstone of Ghana’s financial stability and modernization.
This landmark achievement underscores the central bank’s enduring vision and commitment to fostering economic growth, stability, and resilience.
