Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club have reclaimed the top spot in the 2024-2025 Ghana Premier League after securing a 2-0 victory over Young Apostles FC.
The match, played at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, marked the return of the league following a suspension due to recent tragic events.
The competition was halted after violent clashes at a fixture between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman led to the death of Kotoko supporter, Francis Yaw “Pooley” Frimpong. After extensive deliberations among football stakeholders and a befitting burial for Pooley, the league was cleared to resume.
In their first match since the break, Hearts of Oak took control of proceedings, with Michael Awuah Mensah heading in a corner kick in the 43rd minute to give his team the lead. Just two minutes into the second half, Hamza Issah doubled the advantage, sealing the win for the Phobians.
Speaking after the game, Young Apostles’ head coach, Abdul Rashim Bashiru Tijani, acknowledged the strength of the opposition, stating, “They [Hearts of Oak] deserved the three points.”
Notably, Bashiru Tijani previously served as an assistant coach for Hearts of Oak before taking charge of Young Apostles.
The victory lifts Hearts to 36 points, two points clear of second-placed Bibiani Gold Stars and third-placed Kumasi Asante Kotoko, who both sit on 34 points. Kotoko are set to face Legon Cities, while Gold Stars will take on Nations FC on Sunday, March 9.
With the league now back in full swing, fans can look forward to more thrilling encounters as the season progresses.
