The government has announced the recall of all Diplomatic and Service Passports issued during the tenure of the previous administration.
This measure, aimed at preserving the integrity of Ghana’s official travel documents, seeks to ensure proper usage while safeguarding the nation’s diplomatic reputation.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government stressed the importance of preventing any misuse of these passports, underscoring the need for stricter oversight in their issuance and management.
Public notice and compliance deadline announced
As part of this initiative, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been directed to issue a public notice instructing all holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous administration to return them for verification.
A compliance deadline of January 24, 2025, has been set for this exercise, providing passport holders with a reasonable window to adhere to the directive.
In addition to the recall, the Ministry will conduct a thorough review of all returned passports to confirm their eligibility under current regulations.
Passports meeting the criteria may be reissued to ensure continuity for eligible users.
Strengthening credibility and efficiency
The government views this recall as a critical step toward bolstering the credibility and efficiency of Ghana’s passport system.
By ensuring that only deserving individuals hold these privileged travel documents, the initiative seeks to protect the nation’s standing in international diplomacy and travel.
Ministry’s role highlighted
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been urged to expedite the implementation of this directive.
Cooperation and diligence from the Ministry are considered essential to the success of the initiative, which aims to set a new benchmark for the administration of Diplomatic and Service Passports.
This move signals the government’s commitment to fostering transparency, accountability, and integrity in its dealings, particularly in the sensitive realm of international relations.
The recall is expected to reinforce public confidence in the passport issuance process while ensuring that Ghana remains a respected player on the global stage.
