President John Dramani Mahama has intensified his restructuring of Ghana’s security sector with the appointment of new heads for the Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
This latest shake-up follows the swearing-in of Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) earlier today. The move signals a broader strategy to modernise and strengthen the country’s security institutions.
A statement issued by the Presidency, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, announced the new appointments.
DDGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie replaces Isaac Kofi Egyir as Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service.
DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong replaces Julius A. Kuunuor as Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service.
DCI Samuel Basentale replaces Kwame Asuah Takyi as Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service.
These appointments mark a significant leadership transition within Ghana’s security services as the government pushes for operational efficiency and national security enhancement.
Expectations for the new security chiefs
The newly appointed security heads are expected to tackle pressing challenges within their institutions, including prison overcrowding, fire safety improvements, and border security concerns.
DDGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie is expected to prioritise prison decongestion, inmate welfare, and rehabilitation programmes.
DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong will focus on modernising firefighting infrastructure, improving fire response capabilities, and enhancing public fire safety education.
DCI Samuel Basentale will be tasked with strengthening border security, addressing illegal migration, and combating transnational crime.
Security overhaul in motion
With four key security leadership changes in just two days, President Mahama is demonstrating a commitment to reshaping Ghana’s security sector.
The reshuffle aims to enhance professionalism, accountability, and efficiency across the country’s security agencies.
As the new appointees assume their roles, there will be keen interest in how they implement reforms to improve security operations and address critical national security challenges.
