The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has recorded 5,596 fire outbreaks between January and November 2024, marking a 6.43% increase compared to the 5,258 cases reported during the same period in 2023.
The surge in incidents has been attributed to harsh weather conditions, public non-compliance with fire safety measures, road traffic accidents, electrical faults, and gas leakages.
Lives lost in the line of duty
Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Julius Kuunuor, speaking during the GNFS’s annual nine lessons and carols and thanksgiving service in Accra, expressed sorrow over the loss of 37 fire officers as of December 18, 2024.
He extended condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen officers and emphasized their sacrifice in the line of duty.
Held under the theme “Be an Agent of Peace,” the event served as a moment for reflection and gratitude, with prayers offered for the peace and stability of Ghana.
Major initiatives to enhance fire safety
In response to the rising fire incidents, the GNFS has undertaken several initiatives aimed at improving fire prevention and emergency response.
These include a national bushfire campaign, the launch of an Automated Fire Permit and Certification Management System, and the commissioning of two fire academies and training schools.
Additionally, new fire stations have been established, and the GNFS national headquarters has undergone a significant facelift. Public fire safety education campaigns, rigorous fire safety audits, and inspections of public and commercial buildings have been intensified to ensure adherence to safety protocols.
Call for public vigilance during festive season
CFO Kuunuor urged the public to adopt safe practices, particularly during the festive season.
He highlighted the importance of avoiding the use of fireworks, safely handling candles and decorative lights, and turning off electrical appliances when not in use.
Cooking should never be left unattended, and emergencies should be promptly reported by calling 112, 192, or 0299340383/03022772446, he advised.
“The safety of Ghanaians depends on our readiness, and I assure you that we are prepared to handle fire and related emergencies across the country,” CFO Kuunuor stated.
Commitment to collaboration and readiness
The GNFS reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining its equipment and training personnel to effectively respond to emergencies.
CFO Kuunuor emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration to ensure adherence to fire safety protocols and prevent future outbreaks.
A time for reflection and thanksgiving
The nine lessons and carols service featured scripture readings, musical performances, and intercessory prayers, creating a space for reflection on the GNFS’s achievements and challenges in 2024.
Prayers for the peace of the nation underscored the broader role of the GNFS in fostering resilience and unity across Ghana.
As the year comes to a close, the GNFS remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard lives and property, ensuring a safer and more secure environment for all.
