The Black Galaxies of Ghana will miss out on next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) after falling 3-1 to Nigeria’s Super Eagles B team in a decisive second-leg encounter.
The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, sealed Ghana’s fate following a goalless draw in the first leg in Accra.
The victory was particularly sweet for the Nigerian side, avenging their previous elimination by Ghana during the qualifiers for the last CHAN edition.
For the Black Galaxies, however, this marks the fourth time they will not feature in the continental competition for home-based players.
High hopes dashed
Heading into the second leg, coach Mas-ud Didi Dramani’s team was optimistic about securing qualification, especially after holding the Nigerians to a draw in Accra.
The Black Galaxies started the match brightly, creating early pressure that kept the Super Eagles on the defensive.
However, Nigeria capitalized on their chances with a ruthless display midway through the first half, effectively ending Ghana’s hopes of a comeback.
Goals from Sadiq Ismail, Junior Nduka, and Isaac Saviour gave the Super Eagles B team a commanding lead, leaving Ghana with a mountain to climb.
Late consolation not enough
Despite a spirited effort in the second half, the Black Galaxies could only manage a late goal through Stephen Amankuna, which served as a mere consolation.
The final whistle confirmed Nigeria’s dominance in the West African derby and their qualification for the 2025 CHAN tournament.
Looking ahead to CHAN 2025
Nigeria will now join other qualified teams at the 2025 CHAN, set to be co-hosted by Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya.
The Super Eagles B team’s emphatic win not only secured their spot but also underscored their readiness for the continental stage.
For Ghana, the defeat serves as a wake-up call to reassess their strategy and build a stronger team for future competitions.
The absence of the Black Galaxies at CHAN 2025 will be a significant loss for the nation, which has a rich history in African football.
