Court restrains Dormaahene from attending Berekumhene’s funeral

A Sunyani High Court has issued an injunction restraining Dormaahene, Osagyefo Nana Agyeman Badu, Paramount Chief of Dormaa Transitional Area, from participating in the burial rites of the late Paramount Chief of Berekum Traditional Area, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II.

The court’s decision came in response to an application filed by Osabarima Kyere Yeboah Darteh II of the Berekum Traditional Council.

Sources reveal that the legal action was prompted by concerns that the Dormahene’s attendance at the burial, scheduled at the same time as the presence of Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu II, could lead to a breach of peace in the region.

The injunction was sought to prevent any potential clashes between the two paramount chiefs during the event.

The Berekum Traditional Council had advertised a programme outline indicating the participation of various dignitaries, including the Dormaahene, the President, members of the Bono Regional and National Houses of Chiefs, among others, at the burial on Wednesday, November 22.

This arrangement was designed to pave the way for Otumfour Osei Tutu II to attend the burial on Thursday, November 23, in line with traditional practices.

Traditionally, the Asantehene is the final figure to attend the burial of a Berekumhene, as it falls within his jurisdiction and authority to enstool a new chief after the burial.

However, the Dormaahene’s decision to alter his attendance to coincide with Otumfour’s presence prompted the Berekum Traditional Council to seek legal intervention.

The court, in addition to issuing the injunction, has called on the Ghana Police Service to assist the Berekum Traditional Council in enforcing the order, with the aim of maintaining peace in Berekum and its surrounding areas.

The legal action underscores the significance of preserving order and preventing potential conflicts between traditional leaders during important ceremonies.
