At least 13 people are feared dead following a devastating three-vehicle collision at Odumase, near Konongo, on the busy Kumasi-Accra Highway in the Ashanti Region.

The fatal crash, which occurred on the major transport corridor, involved a cargo truck loaded with tomatoes, a passenger bus and an empty fuel tanker, leaving several passengers injured and others trapped in the wreckage.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the accident may have been triggered by a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre, resulting in a head-on collision between the vehicles.

However, authorities are yet to establish the exact cause of the crash.

The force of the impact left the vehicles badly damaged, prompting an urgent response from emergency teams who rushed to the scene to rescue victims.

Some injured occupants were pulled from the wreckage and transported to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Rescue and recovery operations continued for several hours as emergency personnel worked to account for victims and clear the mangled vehicles from the highway.

The crash has caused significant traffic disruption along the Kumasi-Accra Highway, with long queues developing as security agencies and emergency responders managed the scene.

The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety on Ghana’s major highways, where speeding, reckless overtaking, poor vehicle maintenance and driver negligence have frequently been cited among major causes of fatal crashes.

Authorities are expected to commence investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
