A petrol tanker has exploded at Potsin Junction in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region, causing heavy traffic congestion along the busy Kasoa–Cape Coast road.

The tanker, reportedly travelling from Accra to the Central Region on March 17, 2026, lost control after hitting a section of the road that is still under construction.

The vehicle overturned, resulting in a powerful explosion that disrupted traffic and raised safety concerns for motorists in the area.

The Kasoa–Cape Coast road is currently undergoing rehabilitation, with several stretches still under construction. The accident highlights the risks posed by roadworks to vehicles carrying flammable cargo.

Emergency services were quickly deployed to the scene to manage the situation. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service’s Apam Fire Station rushed to Potsin Junction to contain the fire and prevent further damage.

The explosion has caused significant traffic gridlock, leaving motorists stranded for hours as responders worked to secure the area. Vehicles were forced to halt in both directions, with some drivers seeking alternate routes to avoid the affected stretch.

Authorities have advised motorists to exercise caution and follow instructions from emergency personnel while traffic management efforts continue.

At the time of reporting, there were no confirmed casualties from the incident, though emergency teams are closely monitoring the situation. The fire service continues to work to fully extinguish the flames and ensure the safety of nearby residents and road users.
