This new product launch strengthens the company’s commitment to environmental protection alongside high standards of service and innovation.

Patrick Afari, General Manager of Supply Chain Management and General Services, detailed the environmental design of the new biodegradable SIM cards, explaining how they reduce waste without affecting performance.

“The main difference is that our biodegradable SIM cards are made from forest-certified trees, which degrade in a way that does not harm the environment. Even the metal components are designed to degrade safely, helping reduce electronic waste”.

He assured customers of consistent technical quality, “In terms of performance, there is no difference, the biodegradable SIM Card delivers the same quality, reliability and user experience that our customers expect, but with a reduced environmental footprint”.

Announcing the introduction of the biodegradable SIM, Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, stated that this milestone reflects the company’s dedication to environmental care and responsible innovation. “Today, we are celebrating sustainability. We are proud to have reached this milestone, reflecting on how we can protect our environment, ensure MTN sets the right example, and continue leading in innovation”.

MTN Ghana CEO, Stephen Blewett, highlighted some of the company’s initiatives, including its transition to electric vehicles and commitment to a circular economy.

He stated, “MTN remains steadfast in our commitment to reducing carbon emissions across our operations. Last year, under Project Zero, we announced our transition to electric vehicles and unveiled our first e-vehicle and motorbike. Our fleet is becoming increasingly eco-friendly. In just one year, MTN has acquired two electric vehicles, ten e-bikes and installed a charging station at our head office”.

“I am also pleased to share that our data centres and MTN House are now powered by solar energy and our suppliers are beginning to align with carbon-reduction targets”, he added.

The launch of biodegradable SIM cards is a core component of MTN Ghana’s sustainability strategy.

This strategy focuses on key areas such as electronic waste reduction, promoting circular economy practices and incorporating eco-friendly methods across all business operations.

The introduction of the biodegradable SIM also aligns with MTN Ghana’s sustainability strategy, which also includes eliminating single-use plastics, promoting recycling, and moving toward a circular economy.

It complements other initiatives under MTN’s sustainability pillars, such as advancing digital inclusion, empowering communities, and integrating ESG principles across operations.
