The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee has announced that the Ghana Police Service will have exclusive jurisdiction over security arrangements during the Party’s upcoming presidential primaries slated for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

During a press conference held at the Party’s headquarters in Accra, Mr. Joseph Osei-Owusu, the Committee’s Chairman, emphasised that no private or unauthorised security groups would be permitted at any voting centre.

Mr. Osei-Owusu, also a former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, explained that access to voting areas would be strictly limited.

“All other individuals will be required to remain outside designated security perimeters,” he stressed.

According to him, only delegates, accredited agents of presidential aspirants, and officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) would be allowed within the voting zones.

He urged all stakeholders to adhere to the operational guidelines governing the electoral process to ensure smooth conduct of the primaries.

The Electoral Commission, he noted, would oversee the elections, including the printing, distribution, and monitoring of ballot papers, as well as enforcement of the operational rules.

Mr. Osei-Owusu, a former Member of Parliament for Bekwai, reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to delivering free, fair, transparent, and credible elections that reflect the will of party delegates.

The primaries will see five aspirants contesting for the sole slot to become the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

The contesting aspirants are Ken Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central; Dr Bryan Acheampong, former MP for Abetifi Constituency; Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate for Ghana’s general election in 2024; Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister for Education and former MP for Bosomtwe Constituency; and Kwabena Agyei-Agyepong, former General Secretary for the NPP and former Press Secretary for former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
