The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticised an alleged “despicable and divisive” remark attributed to Kwaku Asante Boateng, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim South, targeting former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The MP, during an interview with Adom TV, is said to have launched an unprovoked verbal attack on Dr Bawumia, arguing that he is unfit to lead the NPP.

His comments have triggered widespread backlash, with civil society groups, party faithful, and citizens condemning the statement as discriminatory and tribal in nature.

Responding in a statement on Saturday, the NPP’s National Secretariat firmly disassociated the party from the MP’s position while reaffirming its dedication to unity, equality, and national harmony.

“The NPP reiterates its longstanding commitment to inclusivity, equality, and national cohesion,” the statement said.

The party emphasised its founding principles, noting that it stands for freedom, justice, democracy, and equal opportunity.

“As a political tradition founded on the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, and equal opportunity, the Party remains dedicated to fostering a society where every Ghanaian, irrespective of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or social background, can participate meaningfully in national development.”

It further clarified that party membership and recognition are earned through dedication and service, not based on ethnic or personal identity.

“The NPP welcomes all citizens who subscribe to its core values and principles and are willing to contribute to the advancement of Ghana’s democratic and developmental agenda,” the statement added.

Signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the statement assured Ghanaians that the party will continue to defend the dignity of all citizens and promote tolerance, mutual respect, and inclusiveness within the political space.
