President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, accountability, and results-oriented leadership, stressing that his government is on a mission to “reset agenda” after years of economic decline, corruption, and widespread hardship.

Speaking at media engagement since taking office in January 2025, the President delivered a comprehensive update on national progress, outlining achievements in the economy, education, healthcare, agriculture, digital innovation, anti-corruption efforts, security, and infrastructure development.

Reflecting on his swearing-in eight months ago, Mahama described the 2024 elections as a “national reawakening” and a mandate for a new style of governance — one that listens, delivers, and restores dignity to public service.

Newscenta highlights 10 key points boiled down from the speech.

  • Economic reset and stability – Inflation has dropped from 23.8% in Dec 2024 to 11.5% in July 2025, exchange rate stabilised, cost of living eased, and credit rating upgraded to B- with stable outlook.

  • Power and energy security – The government claims to have averted dumsor, rescued the power sector, and approved a second gas processing plant (GPP-2) expected to save $500m every two years and create 1,000+ jobs.

  • Education investments – Record funding for basic education and Free SHS (₵3.5 billion allocated), rollout of the No-Fee Stress Policy (refunding fees for 120,000 tertiary students), Student Loan Plus Policy, Free Tertiary Education for PWDs, and the Ghana National Research Fund (₵50m).

  • Healthcare expansion – National health budget increased by 13.4% (₵17.8bn in 2025), NHIS funding boosted by 66%, launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, and over ₂ billion cedis for healthcare infrastructure including hospitals and clinics.

  • 24-hour economy initiative – A bold policy to boost productivity and jobs, with institutions like Tema & Takoradi ports, Passport Office, and Ghana Publishing Company already operating 24/7. A dedicated 24-hour policing unit has also been established.

  • Youth, jobs and digital economy – Launch of Adwumawura Program, National Apprenticeship Program, and One Million Coders Initiative, equipping young Ghanaians with skills for the digital future and employment opportunities.

  • Agriculture and food security – Renewed focus on youth in agriculture, irrigation, and revitalisation of the Land and Farm Bank Project, with the aim of making Ghana food-secure and export competitive.

  • Anti-corruption drive – Ongoing prosecutions under Operation Recover All the Loot, with over 200 cases under investigation, including high-profile cases (SkyTrain, National Cathedral, Exim Bank). A new Code of Conduct for Public Officials and anti-corruption strategy have been launched.

  • Fight against illegal mining (Galamsey) – Over 440 excavators seized, 1,400 arrests, nine forest reserves recovered, and the Tree for Life Initiative underway. Plans to repeal LI-2462 to formalise ban on mining in forest reserves.

  • Infrastructure and decentralisation – Launch of the Big Push Program with ₵14bn from oil & gold revenues for road projects, and 80% of District Assemblies Common Fund now directly allocated to MMDAs for local development.
