The National Communications Authority (NCA) has confirmed that it has received a formal response from MultiChoice Ghana regarding the regulator’s notice of intention to suspend the company’s authorisation and its request for a review of the company’s pricing model of DStv.
In a press release dated September 7, 2025, the NCA disclosed that further engagements have taken place with the pay-TV operator following its public statement of September 5, 2025.
The Authority announced that the first meeting of the Stakeholder Committee, which has been tasked to evaluate DSTV subscription fees in Ghana, will take place on Monday, September 8, 2025.
Minister’s ultimatum and public outcry
The development follows a stern warning issued by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George.
He declared that the government would proceed to shut down MultiChoice Ghana’s DStv operations on September 6 if the company failed to enter into discussions aimed at reducing subscription prices.
His remarks came after MultiChoice Ghana rejected widespread suggestions that it had already agreed to cut subscription rates, even as the government pressed forward with the establishment of a joint stakeholder committee to decide on possible adjustments.
MultiChoice maintains no price cut yet
In a statement on September 5, 2025, MultiChoice Ghana clarified that no agreement had been reached to reduce DStv fees.
The company, however, stressed its readiness to engage with stakeholders and affirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue over the issue of pricing.
Three clarifications from NCA
According to the NCA, MultiChoice Ghana has formally accepted the Minister’s directive to participate in the Stakeholder Committee and pledged to fully take part in the review process. The regulator further outlined three clarifications:
First, MultiChoice has agreed to the formation of the Stakeholder Committee to examine DStv pricing in Ghana.
Second, the outcome of the committee’s work will be determined only after its review is completed.
Third, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to respect due process, as well as the laws of Ghana and the interests of the Ghanaian public.
The NCA assured the public that further updates on the matter will be provided as the review process unfolds.
