The Tema Development Corporation (TDC) has accused the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Tema Secretary of engaging in questionable land transactions, including allegedly selling a parcel of land to his wife for just GH¢2,000.

The NPP Secretary, who was a former protocol officer to a former TDC Managing Director, illegally sold a public plot of land in Tema Community 5 to his wife.

According to TDC, the land was originally earmarked for a public toilet facility but was unlawfully transferred.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, September 4, TDC Managing Director Courage Makafui Nunekpeku revealed that the officer’s contract was terminated after an internal probe uncovered the transaction.

He added that the land, located behind Tema Secondary School, has since been reclaimed for state use.

“The NPP Tema Central Constituency Secretary sold that land to his wife for GH¢2,000. I have the documents to prove it. When I discovered it, I engaged the woman and terminated the contract,” Nunekpeku stated.

He stressed that TDC’s mandate is to protect public lands, not to grab them, saying: “The contract was terminated, and the land is now back with the state to be used for the intended public toilet facility.”

Reports indicated that the land, valued at a significantly higher amount, was transferred under circumstances that the TDC describes as irregular.

The corporation alleged that the NPP Secretary used his influence to facilitate the transaction, later registering the land in his wife’s name at a highly discounted price.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has lifted the temporary suspension on state and public land transactions, paving the way for the sale, lease, and processing of state lands under new measures aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability.

The suspension, which took effect on January 10, 2025, was introduced to allow for a comprehensive review of Ghana’s land administration system.
