Mohammed Ali jailed 10 years for firearms possession and robbery

The Upper West Regional Police Command has announced the successful prosecution of Mohammed Ali, who has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for firearms possession and robbery-related offences.

The sentencing was delivered on Monday, August 11, 2025, by His Honour Jonathan Avoogo.

According to the police, Ali came to their attention after being involved in a fatal motor accident at Bugubelle on July 30, 2025.

Responding officers found incriminating items, including ammunition and an offensive weapon, at the scene.

During interrogation, Mohammed Ali admitted knowledge of the seized items and confessed to being aware of ongoing robberies in the municipality and possession of firearms. He also identified other accomplices who remain at large.

Mohammed Ali was charged with robbery, preparation to commit robbery, and unlawful possession of a firearms. He pleaded guilty to all charges, resulting in his conviction and sentencing.

Police say efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.

The Upper West Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the safety and security of residents.

Meanwhile, a social media activist, Sir Obama Pokuase, was charged and granted bail of GH¢50,000 with three sureties, two of whom must be salaried workers.

He was arrested by the police on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, as part of ongoing intelligence-led operations targeting networks involved in the illegal possession and public display of sophisticated weapons.

According to the Police, Sir Obama Pokuase is assisting with investigations into images and videos he allegedly shared on social media, which depict individuals brandishing illegally acquired, high-grade firearms.

These operations, active for several weeks, have so far led to the seizure of a significant cache of illicit arms and ammunition.
