Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has completed a move to Spanish side Villarreal CF on a one-year deal, the club announced on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

The 32-year-old joins the Yellow Submarine as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with English Premier League club Arsenal.

Partey’s move marks a return to La Liga, where he previously spent several successful years with Atlético Madrid before his switch to England in 2020.

Villarreal hailed Partey’s experience and versatility, saying the Ghana international would bring strength, intelligence, and leadership to the club’s midfield. The short-term deal is believed to include an option for a one-year extension, pending performance.

Villarreal are currently reinforcing their squad ahead of the new campaign, with Partey’s decision to sign reportedly influenced by the club’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Villarreal manager Marcelino García Toral is confident the Ghanaian can rediscover his best form.

The deal also offers Partey a chance to reignite his international career. Despite recent setbacks, he remains a central figure for the Black Stars and is expected to feature in Ghana’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Villarreal, who finished 5th in La Liga last season, are aiming to strengthen their squad in pursuit of European qualification.

However, the midfielder’s transfer comes amid ongoing legal proceedings. Partey is facing five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, with charges filed on July 4. He has denied all allegations.

He was first placed under investigation in February 2022, but continued playing for Arsenal until his contract expired. On Tuesday, he appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where he was granted conditional bail.

As part of the bail terms, he must notify authorities at least 24 hours before any international travel.

During his time at Arsenal, Partey made 167 appearances, regularly featuring under manager Mikel Arteta. He played 52 times last season, often deployed as a central midfielder but occasionally covering at right-back.
