MTN Ghana has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the nation following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight high-profile individuals, including two ministers of state and other prominent figures.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 6, the telecommunications giant said it had received the news “with deep sadness and shock,” describing the incident as a “devastating national tragedy.”

Among the deceased were the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Murtala Mohammed; and Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture.

The others were Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a former Ashanti Regional Minister; Mr. Samuel Aboagye, a former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East; and three members of the Ghana Air Force—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to His Excellency the President of the Republic, the Government and the people of Ghana, and to the families, friends and colleagues of all those affected by this tragic incident,” MTN Ghana said in its message of condolence.

Call for dignity in mourning

In his personal tribute, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, urged Ghanaians to use the digital space to support national healing rather than spread sensationalism or distressing content.

“We appeal to all to honour the memories of the departed with dignity and to use their social media platforms to promote messages of hope, solidarity, and compassion,” Mr. Blewett said.

His statement comes amid rising concern over the circulation of graphic images and unverified information online in the immediate aftermath of the crash.

Several commentators and civic organisations have called for responsible digital citizenship during periods of national mourning.

A nation in mourning

The sudden loss of these senior political and military figures has plunged the country into grief.

Tributes have poured in from across the political divide, the diplomatic corps, civil society, and international partners, all mourning the personal and institutional void left by the victims of the crash.

MTN Ghana’s statement is part of a growing chorus of voices calling for unity, compassion, and respect in navigating the difficult days ahead.

As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, MTN Ghana says its thoughts and prayers remain with the families of the deceased and all Ghanaians affected by the tragedy.

“May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded
