Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged victorious in the rerun of the parliamentary elections in the Ablekuma North constituency.

The rerun, held on Friday, July 11, 2025, followed a disputed election that was annulled due to alleged irregularities.

After a tense but peaceful electoral process, Aubynn defeated her closest contender, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to become the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North.

The rerun was conducted across 19 polling stations, bringing finality to months of legal and electoral disputes stemming from the December 7, 2024, general election.

At the end of the polls, Ewurabena Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly beating the NPP’s Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes.

The NPP contested the initial results, citing irregularities and missing polling station results. The matter was taken to court, and the High Court subsequently ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure the full collation of all valid votes.

However, the EC admitted to difficulties retrieving results from the 19 disputed polling stations, resulting in a stalemate.

To resolve the impasse and restore electoral credibility, the Commission announced a rerun in the affected areas.

Ewurabena Aubynn, a lawyer and first-time candidate, has been widely praised for her strong grassroots connections and youth-centred policy proposals.

Her opponent, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie—a former MP—had campaigned on her track record and the NPP’s historical dominance in the constituency.

Chaotic scenes amid tensions

Tensions flared in the constituency during the rerun. Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, Deputy National Organiser of the NPP, was allegedly assaulted by individuals suspected to be affiliated with the NDC at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station.

The incident left Asamoah injured and heightened concerns over political violence during the hotly contested rerun.

In a separate incident, two prominent NPP figures—Mavis Hawa Koomson and parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie—were reportedly attacked by unidentified men described as “macho men” during political activities in the constituency.

Despite the chaos, the Electoral Commission proceeded with the exercise, which has now concluded with Ewurabena Aubynn officially declared the winner.

Her victory is seen as a significant breakthrough for the NDC in a constituency long considered an NPP stronghold.
