The Nkwanta Senior High School (SHS) in the Oti Region has been temporarily closed following the tragic killing of a male student, who was shot dead in his classroom during mock examinations.

The Ghana Education Service (GES), on Friday, June 27, 2025, ordered the immediate closure of the school after the situation escalated due to ongoing tribal violence in the area.

Reports indicate that on Thursday, June 26, two female students were wounded by stray bullets while on their way to school—highlighting the growing insecurity in the municipality.

This incident follows earlier unrest at the school.

On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, students clashed with school authorities over the confiscation of mobile phones, resulting in significant damage to school property.

The unrest erupted after staff seized over 200 phones during class hours. In retaliation, furious students launched a protest that turned violent. Several properties, including the school bus, were vandalised, and some teachers were reportedly assaulted during the chaos.

The situation was brought under control after military personnel in the municipality intervened at the request of school authorities.

Several students involved in the violence were punished, including being caned for their unruly behavior.

The Headmaster of the school, Solomon Bagman, described the incidents as deeply unfortunate.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Education Director, Jonathan Korsinah, strongly condemned the actions and assured that a full investigation was underway. He emphasized that those found culpable would be dealt with according to the law.

Nine students were arrested by the Nkwanta Police in connection with the earlier disturbances, particularly regarding the destruction of school property.
