The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 people suspected of being involved in the lynching of a police officer, General Constable Redeemer Owusu, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.

According to the police’s statement, General Constable Owusu was part of a team that went on patrol of the Gindabour-to-Kenkyen Community road.

In the course of the patrol, the team chanced upon a motorcyclist who, upon seeing the team, diverted his bike into the bush.

The patrol team became suspicious and pursued the motorcyclist using a different route.

They, however, came upon the unconscious body of the rider on the road.

They therefore picked him up and decided to convey him to the hospital. The suspect, however, died en route.

When news of the cyclist’s death reached the community, an irate mob from the community attacked the officers, resulting in the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu and injuries to the other members of the team.

The police vehicle was also damaged in the attack.

The bodies of the motorcyclist and the police officer have since been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Following this incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuhu, has deployed a team of investigators and intelligence officers to investigate the matter.

Police reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla and other districts have also been deployed to keep the peace.

The 36 persons so far arrested in connection with the attack are in police custody and will be arraigned before the court.
