Two unidentified women tragically lost their lives on Saturday in a horrific accident near Omama Shop in East Legon.
Three others who sustained injuries comprising drivers of the two vehicles and another occupant of one of the vehicles are receiving treatment at the hospital.
The deadly crash occurred when a speeding Jaguar collided with a black Acura, sending both vehicles into an electric pole and igniting a fierce blaze.
According to witnesses, the white Jaguar, reportedly driving well above the residential speed limit, lost control while attempting to navigate a curve.
The impact of the crash forced both vehicles off the road, causing a nearby electric pole to topple.
Live electrical wires fell onto the vehicles, sparking an intense fire that engulfed both cars.
Victims trapped in blaze
The two women inside the Acura were unable to escape the flames and were tragically burned beyond recognition. Firefighters struggled to control the blaze and extricate the victims, whose bodies were charred by the time the fire was extinguished.
A witness at the scene, still in shock, recounted the events: “It all happened so fast. The Jaguar was speeding, and before we knew it, there was a loud crash. The fire started almost immediately after the electric pole came down, and the flames were so intense that we couldn’t get close to help.”
Two survivors hospitalized
Two other individuals, including the driver of the Jaguar, were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their conditions remain unclear.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), who were called to the scene, confirmed the tragic nature of the accident.
Assistant Division Officer (ADO) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS’s Public Affairs Department revealed that overspeeding was the likely cause of the crash.
Preliminary investigations suggest that one of the vehicles struck a wooden electric pole, leading to the live wires falling and triggering the fatal fire.
