The government has officially commenced construction works on the long-awaited Pokuase to Nsawam highway project following the release of GH¢809 million to the contractor.

The dualization project, which forms part of the Accra–Kumasi road network, is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, enhance road safety, and improve travel time between Accra and the Eastern Region.

This comes after the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) threatened to suspend operations if the government failed to get the contractor back on site.

In a statement issued on August 14, 2025, the operators stated that the poor condition of the road has made it nearly impassable, resulting in increased operational costs due to frequent vehicle maintenance, spare parts replacement, and reduced vehicle lifespans.

They stated that the poor state of the road had not only increased travel time but also imposed heavy operational costs on drivers, who are forced to carry out frequent repairs and replace parts more frequently, ultimately reducing the lifespan of their vehicles.

The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, has confirmed that GH¢809 million has so far been paid to the contractor working on the highway.

In an interview on Accra-based Peace FM on Monday, August 18, 2025, Agyei explained that the government has fully met its financial obligations towards the project.

He said “On July 24, we gave part payment; on July 30, another tranche; and on August 4, the final payment. Altogether, we have honoured the request in full, amounting to about GH¢809 million.”

The Pokuase to Nsawam road is a key highway linking Greater Accra with the Eastern, Ashanti, and northern regions. The project aims to ease traffic, improve transport, and boost economic activity along the busy corridor when the contractor completes the project.
