A powerful, fast-spreading wave of endorsements across the country has significantly strengthened the presidential primary prospects of former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the party moves toward its January 31, 2026, contest.

From the northernmost polling stations to coastal electoral areas and urban constituencies, declarations of support have surged so dramatically that party strategists now describe his campaign as enjoying “overwhelming grassroots momentum.”

The growing bloc of supporters—from electoral area coordinators and constituency executives to former MPs, youth organisers, and defectors from rival camps—believes Dr Bawumia’s winnability, entrenched national profile, and forward-looking ideas place him far ahead of every contender in the race to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

Endorsements Bawumia

The declarations captured so far show a consistent, almost uniform pattern of confidence in Dr Bawumia’s candidacy.

His allies note that support is flowing simultaneously from the party’s base, its middle-level leadership, and its long-serving strategists—an alignment that rarely occurs this early in an internal contest.

Supporters across these levels cite his marketability, his long-standing visibility since 2008, and his reputation for bright, transformative policy thinking, especially in digitalisation and economic development, as key reasons they believe he is the most viable candidate to help the party retain power.

In several constituencies, the numbers alone tell a compelling story.

A significant number of electoral area coordinators—who form the backbone of the NPP’s grassroots machinery—have declared their support in the past few weeks.

Endorsements Bawumia

Their endorsements range between 80 per cent and 93% across various constituencies, signalling deep consensus among mobilizers closest to the voter base.

In the Prestea Huni Valley constituency, 28 out of 32 electoral area coordinators, representing 87.5%, have announced their backing for Dr Bawumia.

In New Juaben South, 30 of 34 coordinators, accounting for 88.2%, have endorsed him.

Akuapem North has seen 29 of 31 coordinators declare support, representing 93.5%—one of the highest margins recorded.

In Assin South, electoral area coordinators were reported to be united behind him, though the exact percentage was not available.

In Mfantseman, another stronghold of grassroots activity, 34 of 36 coordinators, representing 94.4%, reaffirmed their commitment to the former Vice-President’s bid.

These coordinators, many of whom have deep influence over polling station executives, emphasised that the growing unity behind Dr Bawumia is an important indicator of the base’s desire for a candidate capable of energising supporters and appealing broadly to swing voters in the national election.

Several of them describe him as the only aspirant with the stature, name recognition, and cross-regional appeal needed to strengthen the party’s competitiveness in 2028.

Endorsements Bawumia

The wave of endorsements has not been limited to coordinators.

Former party executives across multiple constituencies have also aligned themselves with Dr Bawumia.

In Mfantseman, for example, 37 out of 47 former constituency executives have declared their support. They note that a thorough assessment of the NPP’s political direction and the likely matchups in 2028 makes Dr Bawumia the most strategic and forward-thinking choice for the party.

The youth wing is also showing signs of strong alignment. In the Central Region alone, 30 of 47 former youth organisers have pledged their backing, indicating their readiness to mobilise young voters and lead an energetic grassroots campaign to secure victory for him in both the primaries and the 2028 general elections.

Current constituency executives have also reinforced this growing pro-Bawumia momentum.

In the Mpohor constituency, Chairman Razak Dadzie publicly promised to deliver 80% of total delegate votes to the former Vice-President, warning delegates against what he termed “the mistake” of overlooking the party’s most marketable and widely trusted candidate.

In Nkwanta South, First Vice-Chairperson Pius Amewu declared that he would deliver 90% support for Dr Bawumia in the January 2026 primaries, adding that he believed the former Vice-President remains the only figure capable of returning the NPP to power after 2024.

In Agona East, the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Hannah Asamoah, urged delegates to remain consistent with their political choices, comparing political stability to business longevity, and arguing that “we don’t build a strong market by constantly changing products.”

Executives in Akan and Asikuma Odoben Brakwa have also praised Dr Bawumia’s leadership qualities and endorsed his candidacy.

These declarations represent only a sample of similar endorsements recorded across several other constituencies, painting a picture of broad structural support across the party.

A major feature of the recent endorsements has been the defection of high-profile individuals who previously aligned with rival camps.

In Asunafo South, Deputy Constituency Secretary Eric Agyemang—once a key organiser for the Kennedy Agyapong campaign—publicly announced his decision to defect to Team Bawumia.

He openly withdrew earlier criticisms, admitting that some of the claims he helped circulate against Dr Bawumia were “lies and falsehood.”

His defection is regarded as particularly significant because it reflects shifting attitudes even among former opponents.

Former Kade MP Ofosu Asamoah, who served as Campaign Manager for Kwabena Agyapong during a previous internal contest, also announced his support after what he described as a “careful reassessment” of the party’s internal landscape and future political needs.

Other notable figures who have endorsed Dr Bawumia include Michael Okyere Baafi, Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, former Akwatia MP Mercy Adu-Gyamfi (popularly known as Ama Sey), and several long-serving party strategists and former constituency executives across the regions.

Their combined influence within various party structures further solidifies the momentum gathering around the former Vice-President’s campaign.

Endorsements Bawumia

Across constituencies, regions, and political groupings, the reasoning behind the endorsements is strikingly consistent.

Many cite his winnability, arguing that he stands as the NPP’s strongest contender for the 2028 general elections. They reference his long-standing marketability, explaining that the party has invested heavily in presenting him to Ghanaians since 2008 and should not “restart” with a new candidate at this critical moment.

Others highlight his vision—particularly his digitalisation agenda, his economic proposals, and his broader forward-looking ideas—as qualities that resonate with both party members and the national electorate.

His welfare advocacy within the party, especially his emphasis on building a strong internal support structure for members, has also earned him praise among organisers and executives.

For now, the data, endorsements, and visible enthusiasm suggest that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the clear favourite among the NPP’s grassroots and structural leadership.

With more than 80% support in many constituencies and key defections from rival camps joining his fold, he appears to be entering the final stretch of the campaign with considerable momentum.

As the January 31, 2026, presidential primaries draw near, the question for many delegates is no longer whether he can win, but by what margin he will secure the party’s mandate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
