The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a man seen in a viral Facebook video physically assaulting a woman believed to be his wife in Ofankor, Ga East Municipality.

The suspect, identified as John Odartey Lamptey, was taken into custody on Monday, November 17, 2025, at his family’s residence following widespread public outrage over the disturbing video where he assaulted his wife.

It is, however, unclear why the man assaulted his wife.

According to a statement from the CID signed by Public Relations Officer Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, two of the suspects’ siblings, Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey, were also arrested.

The two allegedly tried to attack a female tenant who was suspected of recording and sharing the video online.

Police intervened promptly to protect the tenant and ensure her safety.

The CID further confirmed that efforts are ongoing to locate the victim, who reportedly fled the scene before officers arrived.

“Her safety and well-being remain a top priority,” the statement said.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence and bringing perpetrators to justice.

The statement emphasised that the Service will continue to act decisively in all such cases and urged the public to report incidents of abuse promptly.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) condemned the assault, describing the incident as “barbaric.”

In a statement released on Monday, November 17, 2025, the Ministry stressed that no individual has the right to subject another person to any form of abuse under any circumstance, and that such acts violate the victim’s rights and are punishable by law.

The Ministry highlighted that domestic and sexual violence remains a national concern and urged the public to report cases promptly.

“We reaffirm our commitment to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in ensuring that perpetrators of domestic violence face the full rigours of the law,” the statement from the Ministry’s Public Affairs Unit read.

The Ministry also encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report suspected abuse through the Domestic Violence Call Centre at 0800-111-222, the Ministry’s Helpline of Hope at 0800-800-800 / 0800-900-900, or by contacting the nearest police station.
