US donates GH₵78m Mobile Field Hospital to GAF

In a significant boost to Ghana’s healthcare and emergency response capabilities, U.S. Ambassador Virginia E. Palmer has delivered a 60-bed mobile field hospital, valued at over GH₵78 million ($5 million U.S.), to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The donation is designed to enhance critical casualty care, especially in remote and disaster-stricken areas.

Fully equipped for emergency response
The mobile field hospital comes equipped with an intensive care unit, two surgical operating rooms, an x-ray facility, a laboratory, a morgue, an emergency room, and two generator sets.
This state-of-the-art facility is portable and can be quickly transported and assembled in hard-to-reach locations, offering full medical and operational support for up to 60 patients in any condition.

Strengthening U.S.-Ghana security partnership
Speaking at the handover ceremony near Tamale, Ambassador Palmer highlighted the importance of the donation in reinforcing the strong security partnership between the U.S. and Ghana.
She noted that the facility equips the Ghana Armed Forces with the necessary skills and resources to provide not only border defense but also critical military and civilian casualty care.
“This handover is further evidence of the close U.S.-Ghana security partnership,” Palmer remarked, emphasizing the dual benefit for both military and civilian applications.
Supporting local communities and security
Ambassador Palmer also underscored ongoing U.S. programs aimed at supporting vulnerable populations and strengthening military-to-military relations.
These initiatives are designed to enhance Ghana’s resilience against the rising threat from violent extremist organizations while bolstering the capacity of the nation’s security services.

Previous donations
This latest donation follows the U.S. contribution of a 30-bed field hospital in 2021 and 2022, equipped with negative pressure isolation facilities and a five-bed ICU.
Valued at over GH₵28 million ($1.8 million), these facilities provided crucial urgent care capabilities to the GAF.
The mobile hospital represents a critical fusion of humanitarian and military assistance, providing essential healthcare services to both the civilian population and the Ghana Armed Forces.
