The Coalition of Unpaid Teachers has threatened to stage another demonstration and is considering legal action against the government over delays in paying salary arrears and issuing staff identification cards to its members.
The group says more than 6,000 teachers who have worked for 12 to 15 months have received only two months’ salary, with prolonged delays worsening their cost-of-living pressures despite a protest organised last year.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on Sunday, January 4, 2026, the Lead Convenor of the Coalition, Simon Kofi Nartey, appealed to the government and their employers to urgently address the situation.
“We are calling on our employer and the government at large to listen to us and have our arrears paid, so that we can all have our peace of mind to continue with the good work that we are doing for the country,” he said.
He also called for the immediate issuance of staff identification cards to members who have yet to receive them, warning that failure to do so before the payment of this month’s salary could trigger another protest.
“The few that are left to be issued with their staff IDs should have it before this month’s salary comes, before we hit the street once again,” he added.
Nartey further indicated that the coalition was exploring legal options, describing the situation as unfair and discriminatory.
“Some of us started work with colleagues who have received their salaries in full, while others are still going through this ordeal. It is just unfair, and it calls for legal action to be taken against the government,” he said.
The coalition insists that until their concerns are fully addressed, members will continue to pursue all lawful means to demand payment of outstanding arrears and regularisation of their employment status.
