Former diplomat and leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Tony Aidoo, has cast doubt on the presidential suitability of former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, questioning both his character and track record in public life.

In an interview with Accra-based Radio Gold, Dr Aidoo argued that leadership—particularly at the presidential level—requires a blend of integrity, discipline, and emotional maturity, qualities he believes Agyapong has not consistently demonstrated.

According to him, while the outspoken MP has earned a reputation for his bluntness and outspokenness, those traits alone do not equate to the temperament and judgment needed to lead a nation.

He said “Oh my God! Kennedy Agyapong as president of Ghana? Ei!,” Tony Aidoo said, before launching attacks into claims made by Kennedy Agyapong, including being a grassroots man and the claim that he will pursue the vision of Kwame Nkrumah if elected president.”

“What does he know about Nkrumah? He, Kennedy Agyapon,g what does he know about Nkrumah?” Tony Aidoo asked.

“He is a loudmouth. He lies, he insults. He knows he can’t be touched, but one day somebody is going to touch him. He doesn’t tell the truth. He concocts stories about people,” Tony Aidoo added.

On Kennedy Agyapong’s claim of being a grassroots person, Tony Aidoo alleged Kennedy had made millions from contracts secured under previous NPP governments and wondered how much of those contracts have been used to support grassroots members of the NPP.

“How many contracts has he got from Kufuor and Akufo-Addo? How much of that did he extend to the party?”

“I’m doubtful if the presidency of Kennedy Agyapong can be beneficial to Ghana. It won’t,” Tony Aidoo added.

Dr. Aidoo’s remarks come amid renewed discussions about Agyapong’s political ambitions following his strong performance in the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer race, where he finished as runner-up to former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the latter readies for the NPP presidential race in January 2026.

Kennedy Agyapong has, in recent months, hinted at a continued interest in national leadership, positioning himself as a voice for truth and accountability within the ruling party. His supporters argue that his candour and business acumen make him a viable alternative to traditional politicians.

However, critics like Dr Aidoo maintain that effective leadership demands more than personal success or popularity—it requires consistency, decorum, and a proven ability to unite rather than divide.
