A 26-year-old TikTok user, Akosua Serwaa Minat, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million with two sureties after her arrest over alleged death threats directed at President John Dramani Mahama.

The court set strict bail conditions, requiring that one of the sureties must be a civil servant earning not less than GH¢5,000 per month. In addition, the accused has been ordered to surrender her passport and Ghana Card to the police and to report regularly to investigators as the case remains under active investigation.

According to the police, Minat was arrested by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) following the circulation of viral videos on social media platforms, particularly TikTok. The videos allegedly contained derogatory statements directed at the President, as well as remarks interpreted by investigators as threats to his life.

Authorities further claim that parts of the recordings appeared to encourage harm against both President Mahama and his wife, Lordina Mahama.

The incident has drawn significant public attention after the videos spread widely online, triggering concern among sections of the public and prompting calls for swift intervention by security agencies. Many users on social media expressed alarm over the nature of the content and its potential implications for public safety and political discourse.

Security agencies say the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to curb the misuse of digital platforms for spreading inciteful, threatening, or harmful content that could undermine national security.

Investigations are still ongoing as authorities continue to review the videos and gather evidence in the case.
