Tamale doctors threaten industrial action over minister’s confrontation

The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) has issued a stark warning of potential industrial action following a contentious encounter between the Honourable Minister of Health and the Head of the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department, Dr Valentine Akwulpwa, during a ministerial visit on Tuesday, April 22nd.
In the said video which went viral on social media, the Health Minister, in the company of the Member of Parliament for the Tamale North Constituency, Alhassan Suhuyini, were seen arguing with the doctor over the treatment of a patient and the absence of a mobile ventilation machine, during an unannounced visit.

In a strongly worded release, the DATTH stated unequivocally, “if the current trend where basic requirements for health care are unavailable, only for health personnel to be vilified for poor outcomes, we will advise ourselves and take actions that may not guarantee industrial harmony.”
This threat of potential industrial unrest comes after the DATTH detailed their concerns regarding the Minister’s interaction with their colleague.
The association claims the A&E Head was unfairly questioned about patient management, leading to verbal exchanges that have been misrepresented in social media and some media outlets.
The DATTH vehemently defended their member’s professionalism and dedication, asserting that he was merely highlighting existing challenges within the facility to improve patient care. They condemned the public scrutiny and what they perceive as the unfair portrayal of their colleague.
To deliberate on their options in light of these events, the DATTH announced an emergency meeting of all doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
The association’s also reiterated their unwavering support for their colleague and vowed to resist any attempts to hinder his work.
They also took a swipe at the media for what they called unfair reportage following the circulation of the video.
