In a closely contested primary held on September 6, 2025, Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama emerged victorious as the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s parliamentary candidate in the Tamale Central constituency by-election.
The primary took place at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, featuring 12 aspirants—a blend of academics, professionals, and seasoned party figures.
Notably among them were three female candidates—Hajia Mariama Naama Salifu, Hajia Mulaika Salisu, and Hajia Shamima Yakubu—marking a rare moment in the constituency’s political history.
The process unfolded under stringent security, with around 1,551 to 1,555 delegates voting, and over 250 security personnel deployed to ensure a smooth and peaceful exercise..
Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama wins
A Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Ghana, Prof. Mahama, secured 840 votes, clinching a clear win in the primary.
His victory was met with goodwill from fellow aspirants and swift validation from Electoral Commission officials upon result declaration.
The result underscores the strong support he garnered across the party base and the confidence his peers placed in his leadership.
Context and significance
This by-election was triggered by the unfortunate passing of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the sitting MP for Tamale Central, who died tragically in a helicopter crash in August 2025.
With the New Patriotic Party (NPP) opting not to field a candidate in the by-election, the primary victor is now strongly positioned to retain the seat for the NDC in the upcoming September 30, 2025, by-election.
The Progressive Youth Alliance (a collective of Prof. Mahama’s former students) had previously endorsed him, citing his academic credentials, leadership experience, and reputation for integrity.
What lies ahead
Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama now has a brief yet critical window to gear up for the September 30 by-election in the Tamale Central constituency on the ticket of the NDC. While the absence of an NPP challenger simplifies the path, ensuring voter turnout and consolidating party unity will be key.
