The Ghana Chambers of Telecommunications (GCT) and the Digital Chamber of Ghana (DCG) have announced the appointment of Mrs Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah as their new Chief Executive Officer, effective October 1, 2025.

Her appointment marks a significant leadership transition in Ghana’s telecom and digital sectors following the end of Ing. Dr Kenneth Ashigbey’s eight-year tenure in June 2025.

With nearly two decades of leadership experience spanning telecommunications, digital services, and the fast-moving consumer goods sector, Mrs Owusu-Ankomah brings a wealth of knowledge, strategic vision, and a track record of achievements to her new role..

She has held senior positions at MTN Ghana, Tigo (Millicom Ghana), AirtelTigo (AT Ghana), and Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC, where she has consistently demonstrated her ability to drive transformational projects and strengthen partnerships between industry and government.

Throughout her telecom career, Mrs Owusu-Ankomah has been instrumental in shaping the sector’s growth and policy direction. At MTN Ghana, she played a key role in securing the 3 G license and submarine cable landing rights, initiatives that cemented MTN’s dominance in the data services market.

Later, at AirtelTigo, she provided executive leadership during one of Ghana’s most complex mergers, navigating regulatory approvals, stakeholder engagement, and post-merger integration, while also supporting the company’s acquisition of an Electronic Money Issuer (EMI) license from the Bank of Ghana.

Her extensive regulatory and policy experience is further reflected in her previous service as a Council Member of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, where she contributed to the Chamber’s governance and advocacy work.

Beyond the private sector, she has served as a trustee of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), where she worked on initiatives to expand connectivity to underserved communities, and as an advisory board member of the Ghana Innovation Hub, supporting entrepreneurship and digital innovation.

Most recently, as Director of Corporate Relations at Guinness Ghana, Mrs Owusu-Ankomah oversaw public policy advocacy, sustainability, and reputation management.

She successfully led efforts to safeguard the company’s operating license, drive local sourcing initiatives, and advance its business sustainability agenda.

Her appointment has been warmly welcomed by industry leaders. Stephen Blewett, Chair of the Governing Council of the Chamber and CEO of MTN Ghana, described it as “an exciting new chapter for the Chamber.”

He added: “Her deep roots in the telecom sector, coupled with her proven ability to unite stakeholders and deliver tangible results, position her perfectly to lead the industry Chamber into its next phase of digital growth and innovation.”

In her acceptance remarks, Mrs Owusu-Ankomah outlined her priorities for the role, emphasising inclusivity, innovation, and collaboration.

“I am humbled to lead the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the Digital Chambers of Ghana at such a defining time for Ghana’s digital journey,” she said.

“My mandate is clear – strengthening collaboration across government, industry and consumers. Together with our members, we will advocate for policies that enable inclusive and sustainable industry growth, safeguard critical telecommunication infrastructure, empower innovation, and ensure Ghana remains at the forefront of Africa’s digital renaissance.”

Mrs. Owusu-Ankomah’s academic background includes an MBA in Management from Coventry University in the United Kingdom, a certification in Public Policy Analysis from the London School of Economics, and a certification in Leading Sustainable Corporations from the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School.

Her appointment signals the Chamber’s continued commitment to strong, visionary leadership at a time when Ghana’s digital economy is expanding rapidly and regulatory reforms are shaping the future of telecommunications.

As she assumes the role, the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the Digital Chamber of Ghana expressed their full support for her leadership, pledging to work with her to build on the foundations laid by her predecessor and drive Ghana’s telecom and digital industries into their next phase of growth.
