The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the robbery and murder of a police officer at Zebilla in the Upper East Region on February 8, 2026.

The arrest followed a directive by the Inspector General of Police on February 10, 2026, instructing the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters to track down a suspect believed to be hiding in the Tarkwa Huni Valley area.

A team of investigators led by ASP James Atampugri was immediately dispatched to Tarkwa Huni Valley and its environs to act on intelligence indicating that the suspect, identified as Simon Apusiga, was in the area.

Upon arrival, the team mounted surveillance and conducted sustained intelligence operations over a three-day period. The suspect was eventually located at Fante Mines Housing, a suburb of Tarkwa Aboso.

In a joint operation with the Western Central Regional Operations Second-in-Command, ASP Raymond Sallas Awuloge, officers swooped on the suspect’s residence and successfully arrested Simon Apusiga, also known as Ananga, aged 42.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect left Zebilla on February 10, 2026, shortly after the February 8 robbery and fatal shooting of the police officer. Police sources indicate that call data records place the suspect at the crime scene between 8:05 p.m. and 8:50 p.m., a timeframe consistent with when the incident occurred.

During initial interrogation, the suspect reportedly denied shooting the officer, claiming that another individual identified only as Apebaa, also known as True Boy, informed him that a police officer had been shot.

The suspect has since been transported to the CID Headquarters in Accra, where he remains in custody assisting with further investigations.

Police say efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons who may be connected to the crime.
