The High Court in Koforidua has thrown out an election petition filed by Prince Addo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Suhum, which sought to challenge the election of Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, as the area’s Member of Parliament.
In its decision, the court ruled that the petition did not provide adequate grounds to overturn the Electoral Commission’s declaration of results.
The judge held that the petitioner failed to present convincing evidence to support claims of irregularities significant enough to affect the outcome of the parliamentary election.
The court further noted that the allegations raised by Prince Addo were either unproven or fell short of the legal standards required under Ghana’s electoral laws.
Describing the case as lacking merit, the judge dismissed the petition in its entirety.
Following the ruling, lawyers for Frank Asiedu Bekoe welcomed the judgment of the court, stating that it validated the will of the people of Suhum as expressed through the ballot.
They added that the decision strengthens public confidence in the electoral process and called on all stakeholders to respect the outcome and collaborate in advancing the development of the constituency.
In the 2024 elections, Frank Asiedu Bekoe emerged victorious in the Suhum parliamentary race on the ticket of the NPP.
He secured 16,855 votes while his NDC contender garnered 15,259 votes.
The election, which was keenly contested, saw Bekoe securing the seat with a significant vote difference, solidifying the NPP’s hold on the constituency.
